Sem 2 Week 11 Contemporary Architecture

This is a modern interior architectural drawing that took about 40 minutes to produce and was made using marker pens and a graphic pen. The piece focuses on capturing the subtleties of interior spaces.

The piece is very successful when it comes to showing depth and breadth especially through the different tonal values that occur thanks to the medium used. The drawing is also successful when it comes to perspective, for the most part, like on the two pillars. The highlights in the back give a good feeling of light and a sense of casting shadows through darker tones. The horizon line passes through the middle of the drawing and it has two vanishing points that are created by the orthogonal lines of the base of the pillars. If there are two vanishing points then that means that it is a two point perspective drawing.

It is not a perfect drawing, for the perspective of the roof seems a little bit off as it feels like it is perpendicular on the line of the wall and so it gives a sense of floating. There also seems to be something wrong in the back of the drawing where the little corridor is and at the back a door. The perspective on the wall of the corridor seems to be wrong and the shadow that’s cast over it seems to not be made by any object.

Sem 2 Week 10 Classical Interiors

This is a 30 minute landscape drawing of a balcony made using conte crayon. It is a classical interior drawing that was created using impressionistic techniques. The horizon line on this piece is situated down, outside the drawing, as it looks like the balcony was drawn from a low angle.

The drawing does a very good job in showing depth and breadth through different tonal values that were created by using the hatching technique with this medium. The light source seems to be falling perpendicular on the balcony and it beautifully creates highlights and shadows like on the pillars. The perspective is mostly correct in the piece and it has two vanishing points, which means that it is a two point perspective drawing. A nice sense of texture is coming out of the balcony, as the shading technique and the impression of the pillar’s reflection implies that the surface is a mirror.

It is not a perfect drawing by any means, for the perspective of the pillars is wrong and it distracts the viewer’s eye. The white space also disrupts the balance of the composition. This could’ve been avoided if a background was added.  Perspective on the right pillar seems to be wrong as well.
